But something about the film remains weirdly compelling. I'm not sure it's in JADE, though. Maybe I kind of dig it too, which is why I've watched it a few times over the years. Its flaws seem designed to drive you nuts. Which, of course, is a trait we associate with Friedkin.Mr. Peel aka Peter Avellinohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10553482286909862975noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2118574901486983093.post-57753935125864050192008-10-11T18:13:00.000-07:002008-10-11T18:13:00.000-07:00Call me crazy (as I probably am) but I have always...Call me crazy (as I probably am) but I have always really dug JADE. I saw it that opening weekend and loved it for all of its obvious flaws. I like the director's cut even more, mostly for part of the last shot under the streetlight where Friedkin seemed to be tipping his hat to himself in THE EXORCIST.
JADE, while nowhere near one of his better films, at least feels very much like a William Friedkin film which is more that can be said for a couple that he made after this. I actually think it makes a good double feature with CRUISING, where that particular feeling of just all out 'evil' seems to creep into nearly every frame.

I know it's a mess but I still dig it...and I will always stand by that car chase in the middle...surely one of the slowest and most claustrophobic in screen history.

Oh, and I damned near teared up during 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN when Rogan muttered that line...I've been telling myself that for years!Nostalgia Kinkyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02506680500183270767noreply@blogger.com
