I don't know, maybe more like determination to keep going with it until finally I was able to. It actually didn't take that many tries to stay with it--the long holiday weekend probably helped but I did get through the whole thing in just a few big chunks.

Cinema Du Meep--

He does bring the craft, absolutely, and at his best it really stays with you.

le0pard13--

Thanks for the terrific comments and I can understand how it may have been a little easier for you. But GUILTY AS SIN, wow--I haven't thought about that in years. I remember actually enjoying it in a dopey cable movie kind of way but I definitely wouldn't place it up against this one.Mr. Peel aka Peter Avellinohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10553482286909862975noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2118574901486983093.post-77275186123943253062010-12-02T20:15:10.371-08:002010-12-02T20:15:10.371-08:00Fine film examination, Mr. Peel. I can understand ...Fine film examination, Mr. Peel. I can understand your frustration (along with J.D.'s) with this particular Lumet film. The only reason it didn't try my patience was due to the fact that I had read (and really enjoyed) Robert Daly's book a couple of years prior to the film's release. Jay Presson Allen and Sidney Lumet's script treatment seemed to really attempt to get a lot of what Daly documented there, along with every single major and minor character.

I think this is one of the best things Treat Williams ever did (though an Alec Baldwin/Lumet collaboration sure sounds like a great idea). The director's filmmaking style, his virtuosity with NYC, and the subject matter still made for a great pairing, I think. Since I first saw it, I've moved it up some on my Lumet list. It's leagues ahead of THE WIZ and GUILTY AS SIN, but behind 12 ANGRY MEN, FAIL-SAFE, SERPICO, DOG DAY AFTERNOON, NETWORK in both of our books ;-).

Thanks for this.le0pard13https://www.blogger.com/profile/09421175808461787862noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2118574901486983093.post-75637156880058247022010-12-01T16:51:42.130-08:002010-12-01T16:51:42.130-08:00I love Prince In The City. He's never showy, yet he always brings the craft and skill to tell a really good story.Cinema Du Meephttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07945241807461396451noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2118574901486983093.post-3823157291129756482010-12-01T12:17:03.816-08:002010-12-01T12:17:03.816-08:00Well said! I appreciate the craft and skill that went into this film but man, is it a tough one to get into. It's like reading DUNE by Frank Herbert. If you can get through the first 50+ pages or so the rest of it is smooth sailing but as you say it is refreshing to have a film that doesn't spoonfeed you, much like recent films CHE and CARLOS that assume the audience has a modicum of intelligence.

Never a huge Treat Williams fan but he does a fine job in this one. I agree with you that it does seem, at times, like he's struggling with the dialogue-heavy script but he powers through with what can only be sheer force of will. This is an exhausting film and it took me several tries before I was able to get all the way through it but I'm glad I did as I really love Lumet's NYC police corruption films with Q&A perhaps being his best, IMO.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08164105442273577128noreply@blogger.com
