From the amazing opening titles sequence to Morricone's score, to Connery, to -- well -- everything. Not a dull frame in the whole pic.

I remeber reading a piece in the New york papers that said it was hard to find a taxi the Friday afternoon THE UNTOUCHABLES opened because everyone was hailing them to get to the theaters (after Canby's rave in TNYT). I believe it because me and my friends were among those racing to the 34th St (or was it the 23rd) Cinema to catch the 6 PM showing...Joe Martinohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11960803506051969149noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2118574901486983093.post-7725816892136202852010-08-16T17:35:24.510-07:002010-08-16T17:35:24.510-07:00Bob--

If I have any reticence in regards to the film at all it's that several of his other films seem to have a great amount to discover in them even watching them for the 100th time today. With THE UNTOUCHABLES I feel like there's not necessarily more to uncover and maybe (that's a big MAYBE) it hasn't aged as well because of that...but I love it anyway. I really, really do. Very glad you liked the piece.

le0pard13--

And thanks to you as well. Very glad to hear that you're a fan of this one too. There's nothing I'd change with the film after all the years that have passed since it opened. Anything else that needs to be said about it, I'd just refer you back to J.D.'s fine comment (I can't say it better than he). Thanks, Mr. Peel.le0pard13https://www.blogger.com/profile/09421175808461787862noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2118574901486983093.post-63663393694887366682010-08-15T23:31:41.124-07:002010-08-15T23:31:41.124-07:00I saw this back in 1987 the way it was meant to be...I saw this back in 1987 the way it was meant to be seen on a gigantic screen (reminiscent of the Cinerama Dome) in a gigantic theater. I wasn't aware it had a number of detractors (at least on Facebook anyway). I suppose those haters are the same ones trashing Edgar Wright's brilliant "Scott Pilgrim" right now. I've only recently developed a love for most of DePalma's work, but I've always been very impressed with "The Untouchables". What's not to like? Great cast, setting, script & of course direction. Like you Mr. Peel, I've seen this one a number of times and it is always great. Well written again, sir!

- BobAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2118574901486983093.post-42260849055315493122010-08-15T20:29:33.046-07:002010-08-15T20:29:33.046-07:00Joseph--

After BLOW OUT, this may very well be my fave De Palma film. For a paycheck movie, he sure puts everything he has into it and it's great to see someone with his style and panache be given a budget and a cast to really hit it out of the park. Yeah, people can gripe about Connery's lousy Irish accent or the stylistic overkill of the train station shoot-out, but screw 'em, this film fires on all cylinders and is just flat out entertaining on pretty much every level.

I agree with you, it was great to see Connery spouting Mamet's tough guy dialogue and he deserved the Academy Award for his performance even if it did feel like he was getting for his entire career. I also agree with you on Costner. It's tough to play straight man to the larger-than-life performances of De Niro and Connery but Costner pulls it off. I'm not a huge fan of the man or most of his work but occasionally he nails it (BULL DURHAM, JFK, OPEN RANGE) so I can't write him off totally.

Reading you engaging piece really has me jonesin' to watch this film again.
