Yeah, the beach scene was a little much but Foster was excellent and, surprisingly, Matthew McConnaughy was actually pretty good as well.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08164105442273577128noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2118574901486983093.post-18254972357351473052009-12-02T23:14:15.553-08:002009-12-02T23:14:15.553-08:00Still haven't seen this but any film with this...Still haven't seen this but any film with this much re-editing makes me curious...And I'd say CONTACT was a solid film where the digital efx actually enhanced the emotional content (except for the beach scene). I wonder if Z will pull a Lucas and put out a revised 'special edition' POLAR EXPRESS in the future. It has some marvelous moments, and the SFX do hold up, but the sum of its parts is definitely missing something (like the women's characters at the end of the film).

I'm in agreement with J.D., as well, in that CONTACT seems to be the last of his good films (although, since I have kids, we take in The Polar Express every season). But, the man did bring about one of my favorite 80's comedies in USED CARS (and he did it without much SFX, too).

Now, that he's immersed himself in a CGI playground, competing with James Cameron, it seems, he's become a less interesting filmmaker.

Great observation, J.D. You guys might appreciate this spoof that's making rounds.

As always, Mr. Peel, another exemplary review of a film worth discussing. Thanks for this.le0pard13https://www.blogger.com/profile/09421175808461787862noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2118574901486983093.post-74093049285578749832009-12-02T07:04:43.728-08:002009-12-02T07:04:43.728-08:00I couldn't agree with you more in regards to Z...I couldn't agree with you more in regards to Zemeckis' recent career. Frankly, CONTACT was the last film of his that I truly enjoyed and thought was great. Now, that he's immersed himself in a CGI playground, competing with James Cameron, it seems, he's become a less interesting filmmaker. And it looks like he's showing no signs of letting it go. Oh well. As you point out, we will always have his live-action films to rewatch.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08164105442273577128noreply@blogger.com
