And I've driven on these freeways quite a few times so you'd think that I would know better. But thanks to you all for your great comments, it's good to know there are others out there who think of this film as fondly as I do.Mr. Peel aka Peter Avellinohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10553482286909862975noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2118574901486983093.post-29214750977028563702011-07-03T17:55:25.483-07:002011-07-03T17:55:25.483-07:00Since you have a car now, you should know...it'...Since you have a car now, you should know...it's the 105 that was new in 1995 and goes to the airport. I think their on-screen vibe is really quite unusual, almost unique, really, and reminds me of the chemistry between Redford and Streisand in THE WAY WE WERE, in that it's the GIRL who is wise-cracking and quirkily cute, while it's the GUY whose recessive, almost passive charisma and physical beauty is fawned over by the camera, the girl, and the audience. Pretty much the inverse of the usual Bruckheimer-Bay action movie couple. I also love how, like all the best disaster movies, SPEED is thrilling in its essential egalitarianism. I'll never forget the rush of seeing this one shortly after it's release and coming home to see news footage of OJ Simpsons low speed chase. The stuff on the bus is so great that beginning in the building and the end on the subway feel a little lacking.Levrockhttp://www.baystateblues.netnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2118574901486983093.post-73754882877688910182011-06-30T08:14:41.180-07:002011-06-30T08:14:41.180-07:00"it’s kind of a thrill to see just how much p..."it’s kind of a thrill to see just how much pure, unabashed fun it still is."

Agreed! I love this film - it is definitely my fave of all the DIE HARD wannabes (I can just hear that pitch now - "DIE HARD... on a bus!") for all the reasons you stated so eloquently in your review. The chemistry between Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock is so good and feels so genuine that I always wondered if they were ever romantically involved in real life. It's pretty hard to pull off that kind of fantastic chemistry but they do and I think this is a large part of why the film works so well.

As for Jan de Bont and is lack of activity since TOMB RAIDER... check out the Wikipedia entry on TWISTER. The guy was a tyrant director and I imagine he must've burned a lot of bridges in Hollywood after the way he treated certain movie stars on the sets of his films. Maybe he finally pissed off the wrong people and has been in director jail ever since.

I know it gets slammed a lot but I actually like TWISTER for the big, dumb movie that it is. It's got some fantastic character actors in supporting roles, which helps distract from the blandness of the leads but I digress.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08164105442273577128noreply@blogger.com
