There's so much good stuff in the movie along with the amazing car chase.

Bob--

I hear ya. I can't tell you how many times I've been in the Mayfair, alone, and picked up some sort of ready to eat meal & justified it by thinking, "Goddamnit, if it's good enough for Frank Bullitt, it's good enough for me." Takes a little bit of the sting out of the walk home.

Tip of the hat to you for one more great essay, Mr. Peel.Bobhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00274916206944493165noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2118574901486983093.post-77123583159681285652011-01-23T18:38:32.814-08:002011-01-23T18:38:32.814-08:00This makes me appreciate the film a bit more. I may have to watch it again and think about the things that you have said here.Emily Blakehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02163221455899041141noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2118574901486983093.post-13742786348859763512011-01-22T16:42:10.130-08:002011-01-22T16:42:10.130-08:00Hans--

I guess this one is actually an exception in that regard.

le0pard13--

Many thanks for the kind words! And you're right, few combos are as cool as McQueen and that town. Now I just feel like watching TOWERING INFERNO once again.

Esoth--

THE SEVEN UPS is was one those films I'm always thinking I'll get around to one of these days. The chase is amazing. My recollection is that the rest of the film, not so much. Maybe I'll have to revisit it to find out.

Ned--

I've heard about ROBBERY, but have never seen it, I'll have to seek it out one of these days. I watched in early 2010 via the Warner Blu-ray, which can be had very cheaply via Amazon, by the way.

At the same time, I picked up Yates' previous film ROBBERY, which I recommend heartily. The chase scene at the beginning of that film is what inspired McQueen to hire the relatively unknown Yates for BULLITT. The no-frills ROBBERY disc can be had cheaply via Amazon UK.

Interestingly, I finally caught up with Paul Williams' DEALING (a Warner Archive release) and Williams cannily uses a clip from BULLITT as the main character watches it on a cross-country flight (the scene we see from BULLITT is of Bullitt running alongside and under the plane).

I appreciate the mentions of Yates' BREAKING AWAY (an all-time favorite of mine), EYEWITNESS (a seriously underrated thriller), and, of course, THE FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE (a wonderful tonic for the mess that Ben Affleck & Co. have made of the "Boston crime picture"). Still need to see THE HOT ROCK, MOTHER, JUGS, & SPEED, AN INNOCENT MAN, KRULL, ELENI, etc.Ned Merrillhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15436251586131278302noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2118574901486983093.post-45527360670912526052011-01-20T22:01:59.317-08:002011-01-20T22:01:59.317-08:00Another great choice from Mr. Peel! I think of "Bullitt" as part of the Great Trio of Detroit Muscle Car Movies, along with D'Antonio's "The Seven Ups (1973)" and "The French Connection" and Friedkin's "The French Connection" (1971). The engines and tires screaming as the cars lurched around and got the hell beat out of them. I forgot that "Bullitt" and McQueen got their first!Esothhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03350908112885406818noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2118574901486983093.post-43292974533089203412011-01-20T14:57:36.024-08:002011-01-20T14:57:36.024-08:00Great, great film examination, Mr. Peel. My wife and I looked at the Blu-ray Disc of it last year and came away with how good it is. Hey, no surprise since it is another of the stellar crime films by director Yates (THE HOT ROCK, THE FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE... heck, even AN INNOCENT MAN is better than a lot that's out there now). And Steve McQueen in San Francisco? No cooler mix than that (your look at THE TOWERING INFERNO proves that). Good call on the airport finale influencing Michael Mann's HEAT, too. Time to tee up BULLITT once again. Really enjoyed this tribute to the film and Peter Yates. Thanks for this.le0pard13https://www.blogger.com/profile/09421175808461787862noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2118574901486983093.post-61615229121733038112011-01-20T14:35:56.097-08:002011-01-20T14:35:56.097-08:00First, let me say that I always really, really enj...First, let me say that I always really, really enjoy reading your writing. Often during late nights, I actually get excited to find one of your posts in my blogroll. However, I'm terrible at leaving comments for my fellow bloggers' posts, but I felt compelled to write one now.

This piece is an excellent memorial to Peter Yates. As well as or even better than any I've read. I actually quite like Krull, as it's part of my childhood. I remember trying to build my own Glave with no success, as an aside.

"There’s no getting around it: Steve McQueen is just about the coolest guy there ever was, ultra-confident in every move he makes wearing that turtleneck and that stare he gives makes you certain that he knows what he’s doing every step of the way as murky as the plotting seems at times." I think really only Alain Delon is his true rival in this department. I have strong man-crushes on both.

Thanks for the wonderful piece.Hans A.https://www.blogger.com/profile/11328243469224993459noreply@blogger.com
